Faculty
Carol A. Markowski
Carol A. Markowski, professor of information technology and decision sciences, died May 24, 2009. She was 58.

Markowski, who had fought a courageous battle with cancer for nearly four years, joined the Old Dominion faculty in 1980 and taught statistical decision analysis, management science, operations management and production planning. Her research included mathematical programming, statistical applications and education, and production planning.

She received her Ph.D. from Penn State in 1980 in industrial/manage-ment systems engineering and operations research. She also earned two master’s degrees from Penn State, and received her B.S. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Markowski is survived by her husband, Edward, a professor of information technology and decision sciences at ODU; two daughters, Pamela and Marilyn, both of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Alan Kunig, of Peachtree City, Ga., and a half sister, Laura Kunig, of Pittsburgh.

Robert A. McCullough
Robert A. McCullough, associate professor of graphic design at Old Dominion, died July 13, 2009.

Born Nov. 22, 1945, McCullough was a mentor and friend to many, both inside and outside the art department. He is remembered as an artist of incisive intelligence, sharp wit, exacting craft and rare passion.

A faculty member since 1980, McCullough developed the department’s emphasis in graphic design in 1988.

McCullough’s work both in fine arts and design has been exhibited nationally and in Europe. He also exhibited his work locally at the Chrysler Museum, Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Visual Arts Center and Peninsula Fine Arts Center.

He earned a B.F.A. from ODU in 1971 and an M.F.A. in design from Syracuse University in 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet McCullough, an adjunct assistant professor of graphic design at ODU with whom he maintained M&M, a small design agency; a daughter, Rachel; and stepdaughter, Karen Goldburg.

Carole A. Hubbard
Carole A. Hubbard, visiting associate professor of art education, died in her Norfolk home July 28, 2009. She was 73.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University, her master’s from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Ph.D. from Penn State.

Before joining the Old Dominion faculty, she was the supervisor of arts for the Newport News Public Schools and taught at Hampton University. She began her career teaching in the Newport News and Hampton public schools for many years.

Hubbard is survived by her husband, Leroy Hubbard; her daughters, Lisa Stern of Newport News, Michelle Bowman of Cocoa, Fla., and Nicole Smith of Suffolk; three grandchildren; her sister, Mary Lou Tosi of Pekin, Ill.; and by Robert Hecker of Newport News, the father of her children.

Katherine Christ
Katherine Christ, of Virginia Beach, who managed the game room in Webb Center for nearly 40 years until her retirement in May 2008, died June 9, 2009. She was born July 12, 1922, in New York City.

She received the Student Services Award for her outstanding dedication to the well-being of Old Dominion students. Many years after students graduated and moved on with their lives, Christ still heard from them, as well as from former faculty and staff.

Christ was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral and a past member of the Philoptochos Society. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, John. Before joining the university, she worked with him in their restaurant, John’s Place, which was located next to the campus.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, five nieces and four nephews.
