Keeping Fond Memories Alive For “Distant” Alumni
As an alumnus who no longer lives in the U.S., I find it very comforting to know that I can still keep up-to-date on what is happening at ODU.
As one who received two degrees and worked at the university for more than 15 years, I can always pick up the alumni magazine and bring back many fond memories of what I experienced at ODU, while learning about the many and exciting things which are still happening every day.
Keep up the great work, and thanks for helping to keep us “distant” alumni informed.

Remembering The Men’s Lacrosse Team
I played lacrosse at the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and VPI (now ODU) in the spring of 1948, but the university does not seem to know we existed.
I’m including pages from the school yearbook (Voyager, 1948 and 1949); my May 4, 2005, letter to the Virginian-Pilot editor [advocating recognition of the pioneering Norfolk Division men’s lacrosse team by the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame]; and a previously unpublished poem to help fill this hole in the athletic history.

(Editor’s note: The Norfolk Division fielded a men’s lacrosse team for three years, from 1948-50. Ed Kovner, who taught engineering technology and was a former player at City College of New York, served as coach. ODU added women’s lacrosse as an intercollegiate sport in 1980. William Hickey’s poem is printed below.)
Foreman Field, April 10, 1948
All of us on the run
Out onto the field
That April 10th BTV
Before television
Virgins at our sport
Set to play a game
We had never seen
Our two-year school
Facing Hopkins’ B team
The faith of our coach
Alongside each of us.
A good afternoon to run
Our sticks swinging
Stands alive with parents
Even some college girls
The game a loss
No surprise to us
Our effort a beau geste
Norfolk’s first ever lacrosse game
A day we remember
A lifelong joy.
