Former Prof’s Estate Gift Supports Scholarship Fund

A bequest by the late Margaret Casto Phillips, professor emerita of mathematics and computer science who died April 5, 2009, at the age of 94, will support student scholarships for years to come at Old Dominion.

Phillips, who joined the faculty in 1945 and retired in 1979, left $150,000 to the ODU Faculty Emeriti Association for its student scholarship endowment fund.

The scholarship fund, which now stands at approximately $350,000, was established by the retired faculty group in 1984.

This scholarship was created to assist a full-time undergraduate student entering his or her junior year of study, who has high academic credentials. Preference is given to dependent children of current ODU faculty and faculty administrators.

Phillips, who lived in Huntington, W.Va., was acting chair of the mathematics department from 1965-67. For many years, she served as the university liaison for the American Association of University Women.
