WARREN F. “BILL” SPENCER
Warren F. “Bill” Spencer, 84, of Charlottesville, Va., a former Old Dominion history professor, died March 3, 2007, after many years of struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.
Spencer joined the faculty in 1956 and taught European diplomatic history. He served for several years first as the chair of the Division of Social Studies, then as chair of the new history department from 1963-67. He left Old Dominion in 1967.
The World War II veteran then joined the University of Georgia, where he retired as professor emeritus in 1988.
While at Old Dominion Spencer co-authored a manuscript later published as “The United States and France: Civil War Diplomacy.” He subsequently wrote “The Confederate Navy in Europe” in 1980 and “Raphael Semmes: The Philosophical Mariner” in 1997.
Spencer is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Lucy, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and son, Buddy, of Stanardsville, Va.
Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of the Piedmont, 2200 Old Ivy Road, Suite 2, Charlottesville, VA 22903, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 674 Hillsdale Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
SARA H. TONELSON
Sara Hamburg Tonelson of Norfolk, who supervised student teachers at Old Dominion for several years, died April 8, 2007.
While raising two sons, she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at ODU in 1966 and 1969. She had a 15-year career as a special education teacher for Norfolk Public Schools, and following retirement continued her work in the field of education as a supervisor of student teaching at ODU.
A member of Congregation Beth El, she was active in a number of Jewish, educational and social organizations. She was also an avid fan of ODU athletics.
Tonelson was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, former ODU education professor, administrator and alumnus A. Rufus Tonelson ’33. She is survived by her two sons, Louis Tonelson (C.A.S. ’80) of Virginia Beach and Stephen Tonelson (M.S.Ed. ’76), a current ODU education professor, of Norfolk. Survivors also include four grandchildren.
Tonelson and her late husband were longtime benefactors of Old Dominion, having established an endowment for an annual faculty award in the Darden College of Education. A gift from the Tonelsons also led to the creation of the Tonelson Garden at Webb Center.
Memorial donations may be made to the A. Rufus Tonelson Athletic Scholarship at Old Dominion, ODU’s Perry Library or to Congregation Beth El.
