Dorothy Fisher ’59 reports that her husband, Thomas M. Fisher, died on June 25, 2007.
1960s
Lt. Gen. H.P. (Pete) Osman ’69, who retired recently after 37 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, is the executive vice president, and in training to become the president and CEO, of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program, according to a story in the spring 2007 issue of the Theta Chi fraternity magazine, The Rattle.
James Sutherland ’69 began his new role as vice president of the Division of Business and Finance at the University of West Georgia on July 2. UWG is located in Carrollton. He previously served as vice president for administration and finance at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.
1970s
Thomas E. Pinelli ’70 (M.S.Ed. ’76) of Yorktown has been named a fellow of the Society for Technical Communication. He has 35 years of strategic-oriented leadership, public-sector managerial experience and project leadership, and applied communications research. He is internationally recognized for his work in scientific and technical communications; his research in the information-seeking behavior of engineers and scientists; and for his work within the aerospace community. Thomas has authored more than 300 publications. In 2002, he won an Emmy as executive producer of the science education television series “NASA Connect.” In 2003, he received the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal for the development of an award-winning series of science, technology, engineering and mathematics distance learning programs for grades K-20.
Niel Ransom ’70 (M.E. ’71) was appointed by AppTrigger Inc., a leading developer of application connectivity solutions for the telecom marketplace, to a three-member advisory council. Formerly the CTO at Alcatel, Niel has played a strategic role in developing key technologies in the telecommunications industry for more than 32 years. AppTrigger is based in Richardson, Texas.
Dahn E. Crandall ’72 (M.S. ’74) writes that, after living in Pennsyl-vania for more than 27 years, he moved back to Virginia in 2002. He lives in Hillsville, about 60 miles south of Roanoke. Dahn works for Aerial Machine and Tool Corp. as a quality assurance coordinator in charge of four QC technicians. Aerial manufactures safety belts, vests, harnesses and deployment bags for the U.S. military and foreign governments, and recently has been making the Air Warrior vests for soldiers in Iraq. The company also manufactures rescue harnesses and helicopter rescue hooks for the Coast Guard, some of which were used in the movie, “The Guardian.” Dahn has more than 26 years’ experience in the quality assurance field. He married his long-time sweetheart, Susan Craig, on Sept. 18, 2005, and became a grandfather two months later. George Sedberry ’72 has retired as assistant director of the Marine Resources Research Institute, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, after 28 years, and taken a position as superintendent of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary at its headquarters in Savannah. Kate Eister Fisher ’75 works at Superior Technical Resources in Tysons Corner as a payroll administrator. She describes the firm as a woman-owned temp/employment agency that meets the needs of high-tech private and government contractors.
Gary T. Lupton ’75 has joined the Member Service Center of TowneBank in Suffolk as a vice president and project manager with technology services. Previously, he worked with the Department of the Navy as an information technology contractor. He and his wife, Debi, have two children, Gary Jr. and Eric. Amy Peters Pierce ’75 (M.S.Ed. ’82) divorced last year and lists her new address as 9 Whitemarsh Court, Dover, DE 19904. For the last six years she has been department chair for the Adult Basic Education/GED Program at Delaware Technical & Community College, Terry campus. Her daughter, Lindy, graduated from the University of Delaware last year and is in graduate school at Stoney-brook University in New York. Her son, Ryan, is a junior at the University of Delaware. Amy is still involved with Youth in Action, a church youth group, and this summer went on her ninth mission trip with them for Habitat for Humanity.

Marcia Brand (M.S. ’77) was recently named associate administrator for health professions at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She will also continue to serve as the director of the Office of Rural Health Policy, which will remain a separate office.
Suzan Allan Marshall ’77 (M.S.Ed. ’84) is in her fourth year as an interior decorator with Decor & You, a national franchise, after 24 years in higher education. Suzie works with residential and commercial clients in the Richmond area. Her husband, Gary, is in his 22nd year with Johnson Wax, selling for the commercial division. Their daughter, Lindsay, graduated from VCU’s School of the Arts and is a leasing agent for high-end apartments in Washington, D.C. Their son, John, is entering 11th grade.

Lynne H. Slim ’77 (M.S. ’79) published an article, “Well-intentioned half-truths,” in the July 1 edition of RDH Online, a continuing education magazine for dental hygienists. A practicing hygienist/periodontal therapist, Lynne is also president of Perio C Dent Inc. (Perio-Centered Dentistry), a practice-management consulting firm that focuses on creating outstanding dental hygiene teams. She has won two first place journalism awards from ADHA.

Deborah Belcher Finlay ’78 (M.S.Ed. ’89) is the director of counseling at Western Branch Middle School in Chesapeake. She has given workshops, presentations, and TV and radio interviews across Virginia and Maryland about issues dealing with children and Internet safety. Her first book, “What Did All Those Biblical Characters Do with All Those Children? A Biblical Search to the Answers of Parenting,” was released in May.
Malcolm Massey ’78 has opened an online travel booking site, Palm Tree Travel, www.gopalmtree.com. He and his wife, Debbie, celebrated their 28th anniversary in June with a surprise party and a trip to the Dominican Republic. Malcolm’s son Brent is in the U.S. Coast Guard based in Chesapeake. His son Eric graduated from Granby High School in June and is attending ODU this fall on a Governor’s Technology Scholarship.
Norman Soroko ’78 has worked for Bank of America the past 15 years. He is in the government credit card division supporting the Department of Defense Travel Card. Norman also works for Altmeyer Funeral Home in Virginia Beach as a funeral attendant on weekends and evenings. He lives in the Ghent area of Norfolk.
Debbie Cardinali ’79 works for Levett Rockwood, P.C., in Westport, Conn., where she practices business law with special attention to transactional, general corporate and health-care matters, including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, strategic alliances and commercial financing. She has two children and lives in Weston, Conn.
Douglas Dayberry ’79 wrote in May that he had recently moved to Los Angeles to support Wachovia Bank’s Western expansion. He added that he and his wife, Martha, were relocating to the San Francisco Bay area.

Paul J. Howley ’80 was recently appointed as a director on the Volunteer Service League of the Museum of Science in Boston.
J. Steven Mayes ’80, ’85, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., was a recipient of the school’s Joseph Kruson Trust Fund Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2007.
Richard A. Paradiso Jr. ’80 reports that his son, Richard, was recently initiated at Theta Chi’s newest chapter, Iota Lambda, at Longwood University. Rick’s father, Richard A. Paradiso Sr., was also initiated with his grandson, making three generations of Theta Chis in the family.
Sandra R. Bryant ’81 (M.U.S. ’88), assistant professor of organizational leadership and management at Regent University School of Undergraduate Studies, received the Outstanding Faculty Award for 2007, as selected by graduating students. She joined the undergraduate school faculty in August 2006. Sandra has worked at Regent for almost eight years in various administrative and faculty positions.
Don Clendenin ’81 moved in 2004 to the corporate office for Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide in White Plains, N.Y., to become vice president of Joint Venture Real Estate. He moved to Belgium in 2006 as vice president of Real Estate Investment Management. He and his family live in Brussels.
Amy Antonucci ’82 is a case manager with Medical Management & Rehab Services and earned Certified Case Manager status in April. She currently is a care manager in disease management with Amerigroup. Her husband, Steve, continues to work at Tidewater Community College, where he recently accepted the position of equipment/safety specialist. Their daughter Angela provides in-home child care and lives in Florida, and daughter Cristina is a front-desk staff member for Marriott Hotel in Norfolk. Amy and Steve live in Portsmouth.
Al Bianchi (M.B.A. ’82, Ph.D. ’93) has opened a new restaurant in Chesapeake, the Fossil Rock Inn, at 1457 Mount Pleasant Road.
April Knight ’82 was the subject of a feature story in The Virginian-Pilot on June 30. She is executive director of the new Western Tidewater Free Clinic, located at 3000 Godwin Blvd. in Suffolk, near Sentara Obici Hospital.
Sarah Goldman McCartney ’82 announces that she recently remarried. She and her husband, Tom McCartney, live in Newport News.
Matthew Kuofie (M.S. ’84) received an M.B.A. in 2006 from Northern Illinois University. He writes, “I was installed as Chief Prof. Enyi Oma I of Abia State, Nigeria, on Oct. 26, 2006, and now serve as an ambassador to the world for economic development.”
Stephen Lane (M.S. ’84), associate principal research scientist for the Virginia Transportation Research Council in Charlottesville, was honored with a 2007 ASTM International Award of Merit. He was cited for his leadership in and technical contributions to Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, particularly related to concrete durability and alkali-aggregate reactivity. He lives in Barboursville, Va.
Kathryn A.M. Miller ’85 (M.A. ’87), principal of Historic and Architectural Resources, has been named to the board of directors for the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation Inc. LAF is a 501(C)(3) organization that promotes archaeological public education while emphasizing professional and ethical archaeological investigation practices and stewardship of cultural heritage. Kathryn has 20-plus years’ experience in historic preservation and cultural resource management.
Gene Fant Jr. (M.A. ’87) was appointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., and promoted to professor of English. He served as the 2007 writer-in-residence at the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond.

Caroline Schloss ’88 is manager of GEMS Recording & Production, which released the CD “Bike Week 2007,” a compilation of selections by performing artists and groups from both the Daytona Beach, Fla., and Outer Banks, N.C., Bike Week events. Most of the artists perform and tour regularly and have produced, or are in the process of producing their own CDs, soon to be released on GEMS. The independent record label ESP-DISK has agreed to license and distribute the “Bike Week” CD series, which will allow GEMS an opportunity to resume work on “Intercoastal Blues,” a compilation and series of CDs featuring Virginia and North Carolina blues artists. Melinda Leigh Cartwright Davis ’89, CPA, was admitted as a partner with Goodman & Co., LLP, on July 1. She provides accounting and tax services for a variety of businesses, including government contractors, construction contractors, engineers, manufacturers and medical professionals. She also has extensive corporate tax experience and serves as a firm-wide resource for multistate tax preparation. Goodman & Co. is one of the largest CPA firms based in Virginia. Alexa Jacroux Biggs ’90 recently joined Belt Collins Hawaii Ltd. as a geographic information systems project manager. Belt Collins is a Honolulu-based planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture and environmental consulting firm. A resident of Kailua, Alexa is an active member of the Hawaii Geographic Information Coordinating Council. She is also the secretary for the Aikahi Gardens AOAO and served as vice president for the Aikahi Elementary School PTSA.
Jonathan Creel ’90 was among a group of six employees at the Jefferson Lab in Newport News who recently received a White House Closing the Circle Award for their role in developing an energy-saving process. The Cryogenics Group engineers invented a series of innovative processes, revolutionizing the way helium cryogenic (refrigeration) plants work, reducing electricity consumption at Jefferson Lab and other Department of Energy scientific research facilities. The new processes require very few or no new components and nearly double the lifetime of refrigeration equipment, while improving system reliability, availability, stability and efficiency. The awards are presented to federal employees and their facilities whose efforts have resulted in significant contributions to or significant positive impact on environmental stewardship.

Robert E. Lusk ’96 was appointed in May as director of surgical services at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the surgery services department, post-anesthesia care unit, operating rooms, and all clinical services associated with the department. A nurse executive, educator and health services leader, Robert has more than 25 years of experience in the field. He previously was clinical director of nursing at Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center.
Capt. Maggie L. Richard (M.S.N. ’96), U.S. Navy, was promoted to her current rank in June. She is a navy nurse research scientist and serves as head of nursing research at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Maggie manages more than $550,000 in research revenues and serves as the active-duty Navy representative for TriService Nursing Research. She also does work with universities, churches and community groups. Her research interest is the holistic quality of life. Maggie was commissioned in the Navy in 1985.

Chris Brumm (M.S.Ed. ’97) was hired in August 2006 as girls head track and field coach at Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake. Both the boys and girls track teams won Virginia AAA state team championships on June 2, 2007, marking the first time since 1983 that a school has won state titles for both the boys and girls teams in the same year.

Bob Faith ’98 and his wife, Jennifer, opened a commercial daycare facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia this summer. Emma’s World Daycare is named after their daughter, who will turn 5 in December. Another child is expected in early March 2008. Bob, a criminal justice major, turned in his badge as a federal agent to become a different kind of agent, a real estate agent, with Dockside Properties on Chincoteague Island. Rebecca Fogerty (M.A. ’02) joined the University of Delaware July 2 as manager of the Office of Women’s Affairs, following a two-year appointment as educational and interpretive program manager of the Seawall-Belmont House and Museum in Washington, D.C., a museum focused on the suffrage campaign and on women’s history in the United States. She is a former assistant director of the ODU Women’s Center.
Bethanie Mickles ’02 was a featured speaker at the National Conference of Minority Public Administrators in Memphis, Feb. 20-25. She presented her research on “Public-Private Partnerships in Economic Development and Their Impact on the Durham Community: Three Case Studies.” She was a member of an international and human rights law delegation that visited Benin and Nigeria in West Africa from May 17-27. While there, she witnessed the plight of women both in the workforce and the home. In May 2006, she visited Guatemala and El Salvador, where she studied the effects of large American corporations on the lives of Central American female workers. This work was also featured in the “Design Life Now” exhibition at the Smithsonian-run Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design. The exhibition also included T.J. Tesha Benjamin (M.A. ’04) has joined the Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau as media relations manager. She has more than 10 years of media and public relations experience, and previously served as events manager for the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeastern Virginia. She remains involved with the organization as a volunteer.
Jason “Twinkie” Bryant ’04 received W.I.N. Magazine’s (Wrestling International Newsmagazine) Journalist of the Year award for 2007. Jason is the Webmaster and lead writer for InterMat, an online Web site operated by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He has been with InterMat, based in Manheim, Pa., for two years. Mathew Wright ’05 was among a group of six employees at the Jefferson Lab in Newport News who recently received a White House Closing the Circle Award for their role in developing an energy-saving process. The Cryogenics Group engineers invented a series of innovative processes, revolutionizing the way helium cryogenic (refrigeration) plants work, reducing electricity consumption at Jefferson Lab and other Department of Energy scientific research facilities. The new processes require very few or no new components and nearly double the lifetime of refrigeration equipment, while improving system reliability, availability, stability and efficiency. The awards are presented to federal employees and their facilities whose efforts have resulted in significant contributions to or significant positive impact on environmental stewardship.

Ryan Roach ’06 wrote in July that he and Morgan Forrey ’07 planned to marry in October. Ryan will begin working on his master of divinity degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in January.

A former public relations specialist in ODU’s Office of University Relations, Susan recently accepted the position of director of marketing communications at Norfolk Collegiate School. Greg, a naval aviator, is the pilot training officer for Oceana’s FVA-211 squadron. They live in Norfolk.
