Jewish Education Week: 4/3- 4/9

<p> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Starting this spring, Old Dominion University will host its first Jewish Education Week. This week of events was constructed by a group of individuals from the Communications Department, the History Department, Hillel, the Jewish student organization, the Institute for the Humanities, the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding, the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department, and the Office of Intercultural Relations. The week of events will begin on Thursday, April 3<sup>rd</sup>, with a film screening, and will conclude on Wednesday, April 9<sup>th</sup>, with a discussion from some of ODU&rsquo;s faculty members and their students about their experiences regarding the Holocaust study abroad spring break.</p> <ul> <li> <u>Thursday, April 3, University Theater, 6:00-8:00PM</u>- <strong>Hatufim</strong>- This event will screen the first episode of the Israeli television series, <em>Hatufim</em>. <em>Hatufim</em> is the TV series the HBO series <em>Homeland </em>was based on. There will be an introduction before the film by Dr. Sharon Shahaf, an expert on Israeli television from Georgia State University.</li> </ul> <p style="margin-left:42.0pt;"> <em>Co-sponsored by the Communications Department, the Institute for the Humanities, the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding, and the Office of Intercultural Relations.</em></p> <ul> <li> <u>Friday, April 4, BAL 9024 Burgess Room, 3:00-5:00PM</u>- <strong>American Dreams -Israeli Formats</strong>- This event is a discussion and Q&amp;A with Dr. Sharon Shahaf, from Georgia State University, about the recent global popularity of Israeli television formats. The discussion will center in on how these formats have been adapted in numerous countries, including the United States, with series like Homeland and inTreatment.</li> </ul> <p style="margin-left:42.0pt;"> <em>Co-sponsored by the Communications Department, the Institute for the Humanities, the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding, and the Office of Intercultural Relations.</em></p> <ul> <li> <u>Tuesday, April 8, President&rsquo;s Dining Room, 12:30-1:30PM-</u> <strong>Interfaith Seder</strong>- This event aims to teach about the Passover Seder in an interfaith setting. Anyone interested in attending this event, please contact Farideh Goldin at <a href="mailto:fgolding@odu.edu">fgolding@odu.edu</a>.</li> </ul> <p style="margin-left:42.0pt;"> <em>Sponsored by The Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding</em></p> <ul> <li> <u>Wednesday, April 9, Hampton/Newport News Room, 6:30-8:30PM- </u><strong>Paris/Auschwitz Post Study Abroad Trip Reception</strong>- The last event will be a discussion by Dr. Annette Finley-Croswhite and Dr. Brett Bebber, along with their students, about their experiences studying the Holocaust abroad on a faculty-led trip over spring break.</li> </ul> <p style="margin-left:42.0pt;"> <em>Co-sponsored by Academic Affairs, the Department of History, The Office of Intercultural Relations, the Office of Study Abroad, and the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding.</em></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p style="margin-left:1.5in;"> All events are free and open to the public.</p>
