CCPO Seminar Series, 4/8

Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) Seminar Series - WHAT LIES BENEATH: EXPLORATIONS UNDER THE ROSS ICE SHELF
WITH ANDRILL

The seminar speaker this week is Dr. Frank Rack, Executive Director of the ANDRILL Science Management Office at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at UNL. Dr. Rack participated in the ANDRILL McMurdo Ice Shelf (MIS) Project deployment to Antarctica in 2006, led the ANDRILL Coulman High Project site surveys on the Ross Ice Shelf in 2010-2011, and is the PI for the development of the hot water drill system used by the WISSARD (Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling) Project in 2012-2013 to achieve the first clean entry into a subglacial lake in Antarctica.research interests include the controls of phytoplankton growth and the factors which control the fate of the photosynthetic material in the surface layer of the ocean, the role of phytoplankton assemblage structure on the vertical flux of material from the ocean's surface, and the role of iron in structuring the ocean's phytoplankton productivity and growth.

Date: April 8, 2013

Time: 3:30 p.m. A reception with coffee and cookies begins at 3:00 p.m.

Where: Room 1202 (First floor) Engineering and Computational Sciences Building

For more information or updates, please visit the CCPO Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/CenterForCoastalPhysicalOceanography.
