LGBT Allied Athletes and Advocates

By Brian Sims

North Cafeteria, Webb Center

In 2000, the son of two retired Army lieutenant colonels came out to his college football team after leading them to the Division II National Championship game as their captain at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.  He remains the only former NCAA football captain to have ever come out, and is one of the most notable collegiate athletes to do so in any sport.

He has appeared on World Football Daily and has been profiled in ESPN, OutSports and The Washington Times.  In the last three years he has been named one of the nation’s Top 40 LGBT Speakers/Presenters by Campus Pride, and one of the Top 40 Most Influential LGBT People Under 40 by The Advocate.

Brian Sims was recently elected to the 182 District of the Pennsylvania House and is Pennsylvania’s first ever openly LGBT state legislator.  He has distinguished himself as an attorney and civil rights advocate in Center City and served as the Staff Counsel for Policy and Planning at the Philadelphia Bar Association.
