New Faculty Workshop Series

New Faculty Workshop 4: Writing and Reading in Content Courses

Transitioning to a new work environment can be an overwhelming experience. Old Dominion University and its Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT) are committed to our new faculty members, and we provide opportunities to explore different aspects of teaching.

This is the fourth (of six) workshop of the Workshops for New Faculty Members series. In Workshop 4, participants will have the opportunity to engage with information offered by members of the ODU’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) team. The main topic is identifying ways to incorporate writing into your course(s) in order to improve your students’ writing skills.

Adobe Connect

Adobe Connect is an online meeting tool where faculty and students can engage in synchronous collaboration using text, audio, and video. Participants in online meetings can also share applications and a whiteboard during the meeting. This is a two part series that must be taken in sequence.

(1) In the "Basics Workshop" participants will learn the "basics" of using the online meeting interface.

(2) In the "Beyond the Basics Workshop" participants will explore and practice using the many "beyond basics" features and tools as they relate to content presentation, student presentation, collaboration, document sharing, small group work, recordings, and more.

To accommodate recent demand, a new series has been added.  Seats are filling up fast!

Blackboard: Open Topic

Please note that REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for the open topic sessions.

Have you wanted to ask a question about how to accomplish something in Blackboard but couldn't find a workshop topic about it? Now you can come to one (or more) of these two-hour open house sessions to ask your question and to get help with your tasks.  Instructional designers and technology specialists will be available to assist you.

Blackboard Grade Center: Making it Work for You

Explore the features of the Blackboard Assignments tool and the gradebook. Some topics covered include: working with gradebook items (manual entry and automated), adding and over-riding grades, linking grades to discussion boards and assignments, and integrating Bb gradebook with your Excel gradebook.

Turning Point: Clickers in the Classroom

A personal response system uses hand-held devices, also known as "Clickers", that can be used in the technology classrooms to receive immediate feedback from the entire class during live lecture. Faculty members who are interested in using Clickers in technology classrooms need to coordinate with Classroom Central in advance. In this workshop, you will become familiar with the software and explore best practices for optimum results.

Bb: Organization Leader

Once each month, the Center for Learning and Teaching will offer Blackboard Organization Leader training for non-academic uses of Blackboard.

This workshop is designed for faculty and staff who will be facilitating an organization in Blackboard. Organizations are NON-CREDIT sites in Blackboard that allow for academic and administrative departments and other non-credit units to provide training to the university community.

This hands-on workshop will be held on

Friday, January 18 from 10am-noon

Friday, February 15 from 10am-noon

Friday, March 22 from 10am-noon

Friday, April 19 from 10am-noon

and will offer an opportunity to learn the basics of organization management, including enrollments, content, and assessment.
