Soprano Cadences Using the Dominant Seventh

Certain melodic patterns in the soprano suggest specific harmonizations at the cadence.

  1. 3 - 2 - 1 in soprano suggests the cadential I six-four, followed by V7 , followed by I.
  2. 2 (half note) - 1 suggests ii(6) - V7 - I.
  3. 8 - 7 - 8 is frequently harmonized a I six-four - V7 - I
  4. 5 - 4 - 3  commonly has a I six-four - V7 - I
  5. 2 - 7 - 1  suggests ii(6) - V7 - I
