MUSIC THEORY

Music 221

Mod 14

Ties

A tie is a curved line which connects two notes of the same pitch and causes the duration of the pitch to be the sum of the two notes.

Syncopation

When ties are used in such a way as to cause longer note values to not coincide with the beat, we have syncopation.

Syncopation places  accents in places against the normal accents of the meter.

Beams and Meter

Notes are beamed in such a way as to clearly show the meter of the music.
