Program Requirements

Resume and Preplacement Interview

Students must submit a current resume to the faculty director prior to contacting placement agency personnel. Resumes are usually checked and approved by the director during preplacement interviews. Preplacement interviews are required and are scheduled during the first two weeks of each semester. You must complete the preplacement interview prior to scheduling an interview with a prospective internship agency. All interns are also required to turn in an updated copy of the resume, revised to include your internship, upon completion of the internship. The Career Management Center provides examples of, and assistance with preparing resumes (683-4388).

Contract

Students must complete a contract which is signed by the placement supervisor. Once you have completed the preplacement interview and placement agency interview, pick up a contract and course syllabus for the current semester, from the director. The contract must be picked up, and returned to the internship director, as soon as possible. Both interns and supervisors should keep a copy of the signed contract.

Volunteer Hours and Time Sheet

50 volunteer hours are required for each academic credit taken (i.e. 3 credits of course work = 150 volunteer hours). You must register for at least 3 credits unless you have permission from the faculty director. Students must keep a time sheet documenting the number of hours completed. Your supervisor must sign your time sheet at the end of the internship to verify the number of hours. Only those hours directly associated with your placement may be counted toward the internship. Library research associated with your research paper may not be counted toward your hours.

Internship Journal

You must keep an internship journal in which you critically reflect upon and analyze your internship experience. This journal is to be a self-conscious effort at thinking about what you are learning. Notes, reflections, insights, connections, and critiques from work experiences, readings, other relevant courses or experiences are to be recorded in your journal. Entries should reflect a serious effort to synthesize theory and practice, and you will be expected to write in the journal each time you work at the agency.

Research Paper

The extracurricular study will be concluded with a typewritten paper reflecting upon the internship experience. This paper should be approximately 10-15 pages long for 3 hours credit and 15-20 pages long for 6 hours credit. Half of the paper must be a traditional research paper on a topic which relates to the internship. Appropriate library sources MUST be used. Journal articles are required; a few books/government documents can also be used. The remaining half of the paper should relate your internship experiences to the research you have conducted.

Students who fail to conduct library research, and those who only summarize their experience, will not pass the course.

Old Dominion University E-mail Account

You can establish an E-mail account by visiting one of the computer labs on campus. NOTE: E-mail accounts are recommended, but optional for summer interns.

Grading

As previously stated, students either pass or fail this course, there are no letter grades. Students will be graded on both their academic performance and supervisor's evaluation. Evaluation forms are mailed to supervisors towards the end of the semester. Students must have completed and returned their contract before evaluations forms will be mailed. A satisfactory evaluation from your supervisor is required to receive a passing grade. Failing any one of the academic components or an unsatisfactory work evaluation will result in an F.

All materials are due no later than the last day of classes at the end of the semester. (Consult the schedule of classes). You are responsible for turning in your updated resume, time sheet, journal and paper on time.
