I am the Kaufman Lecturer in Public Affairs at Old Dominion University and teach courses in both political science and history. My M.A. was earned at the University of Virginia, and my Ph.D. in American diplomatic history at West Virginia University.
I commenced my career at the forerunner of Old Dominion, the Norfolk Division of William and Mary, teaching history courses on the freshman and sophomore level. From 1963 to 1968 I was Dean of Students, and in 1968 was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia's Second District. My principal congressional committee was the House Armed Services Committee, but I also served a six-year term on the Select Committee on Intelligence, and two years on the Ethics Committee.
I retired from the Congress in January 1987 and filled the academic chair mentioned above. My political science courses included one on lobbies and interest groups, another on 20th-century U.S. diplomacy, and 20th-century dictatorships. I have published two volumes of my congressional diaries.
