SPACE program includes dedicated research computers linked to
the campus network and GIS server resources. These include 12
Pentium computers, Macintosh, large-format plotter, digitizing
table, scanners, and high-performance workstations. The OE&AS
department also supports a live
weather station.
Our research labs are located
in the Oceanography/Physics Bldg.(room 331) and Batten Arts
& Letters Bldg. (343.)
FIELD EQUIPMENT
A set of GPS receivers are
maintained for classroom and research use, including the
following:
- Leica GS50 and GS5+
real-time differential-ready GPS receivers
- Leica binocular laser
range-finder
- Garmin eTrex Vista
- Topcon Turbo-G1
- Teletype GPS
- Compaq IPAQ PDAs running
ArcPad
- Two laptop computers
- Sony Mavica and Nikon
CoolPix digital cameras
Numerous other geotechnical
surveying and physical instruments are also available. Remote
sensing instrumentation includes various vegetation
measurement devices, densiometers, and LAI PAR ceptometer.
SOFTWARE
State-of-the-art GIS, remote
sensing, spatial analysis, and statistical software are used
in research and instructional programs. These programs
include:
- ESRI GIS Software ArcGIS,
ArcView, ArcPad and all other products on Virginia
university site license
- Erdas IMAGINE remote sensing
image processing software
- Idrisi GIS
- Adobe Illustrator and
Acrobat Publisher software
- Corel DRAW
- Systat, SPSS, and SAS
statistical software
