Japanese Studies Minor



Established in 1998, the Japanese Studies Minor consists ofMieko Ishibashi 14 credit hours for 300- and 400-level courses that combine the study of language and culture. For the completion of the minor, a student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.00 in all courses taken toward the minor and complete at least six hours in upper-level Japanese courses at Old Dominion University.   1. Prerequisites (12 credits):

    • JAPN 212 (changed from 112)
  2. Required courses (8 credit hours):
    • JAPN 311 Advanced Japanese Language and Culture I (4 credits)
    • JAPN 312 Advanced Japanese Language and Culture II (4 credits)
  3. Electives (6 credit hours from any two different subject areas listed below):
    • ECON 454/554 Developmental Economics
    • FLET 310 Faces of Japan
    • H&PE 497 Theory of Martial Arts
    • HIST 337 Early Japanese History
    • HIST 338U Japan's Era of Transformation
    • MGMT 465 Korean & Japanese Management
    • PHIL 485 Japanese Religion and Philosophy
    • POLS 436 Japanese Politics
    • TOPICS COURSES (Any topics course dealing with Japan in any discipline can be applied toward the minor. Advisor's approval is required.)

Sumitomo Scholarship

Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of AmericaScholarships are available for students majoring in Engineering or Business with high academic standing. They include full tuition and air fare to and from Japan for a summer internship at the Sumitomo company in Japan.
