Established in 1998, the Japanese Studies Minor consists of 14 credit hours for 300- and 400-level courses that combine the study of language and culture. For the completion of the minor, a student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.00 in all courses taken toward the minor and complete at least six hours in upper-level Japanese courses at Old Dominion University. 1. Prerequisites (12 credits):

   • JAPN 212 (changed from 112)
2. Required courses (8 credit hours):
   • JAPN 311 Advanced Japanese Language and Culture I (4 credits)
   • JAPN 312 Advanced Japanese Language and Culture II (4 credits)
3. Electives (6 credit hours from any two different subject areas listed below):
   • ECON 454/554 Developmental Economics
   • FLET 310 Faces of Japan
   • H&PE 497 Theory of Martial Arts
   • HIST 337 Early Japanese History
   • HIST 338U Japan's Era of Transformation
   • MGMT 465 Korean & Japanese Management
   • PHIL 485 Japanese Religion and Philosophy
   • POLS 436 Japanese Politics
   • TOPICS COURSES (Any topics course dealing with Japan in any discipline can be applied toward the minor. Advisor's approval is required.)

Suggested Schedule:

Scholarships are available for students majoring in Engineering or Business with high academic standing. They include full tuition and air fare to and from Japan for a summer internship at the Sumitomo company in Japan.
