The Geography program is staffed by professionally active faculty
committed to research, teaching, and close interaction with majors and
minors. Both the B.A. and B.S. degrees are designed to provide
students with a broad-based background in the discipline and a command
of the tools of geographic research. In addition to the general
major, students may specialize in Geographic
Information Systems, Environment
and Resources or Urban
Geography. Each of these sequences support the
University's mission to excel in areas which are appropriate to the
opportunities afforded by its location in the heart of greater Hampton
Roads, a major metropolitan area at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and
one of the nation's leading ports.
Geography majors are required to study four topics: introductory
cultural and environmental geography, cartography, and research
design. Presently, our faculty comprises 5 full-time and 5
part-time members serving 50 student majors and approximately as many
student minors.
In addition, the program offers a
certificate in Geographic Information Science (GISci)
and certification in
Spatial Analysis of Coastal
Environments (with the Department of Ocean, Earth and
Atmospheric Science.)
