Hassencahl's research interests include the political uses of
the media and the intersection of tradition and modernity in
the Middle East. Dr. Hassencahl's research has focused on political cartoons, including those that address the
issues of 9/11, the Iraq War, and the death of Yasser Arafat. The results of this work are
six book chapters and eleven convention papers. She continues
her interest in the Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk and published
an article on his work in Abhath Al - Yarmouk ( Jordan) and
presented papers on his work at two conferences in Jordan. Currently
she chairs the Politics Section of the American Culture Association
and is a recent chair of the Intercultural Section of the Eastern
Communication Association. As a participant in two Title 6 grants,
she travelled to Turkey, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam. She
was a Fulbright scholar in Morocco and a Malone Fellow in Egypt,
Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Syria. Most recently, she was a summer guest lecturer at Al Akhawayn University in Morocco. Her interests in the Middle
East and debate are combined in the Model League of Arab States
program (COMM 337). Dr. Hassencahl directs the minor in Middle Eastern
Studies.
