Description
Habibi is the first full-length fictional feature film shot in the Gaza Strip in nearly two decades (and the first Arab-language film ever to be shot in Gaza). The film is a love story adapting the famous 7th Century Sufi Parable, Majnun Layla. The film has screened all over the world but has never been shown in Hampton Roads. The event is being held partly in response to the President's challenge to enhance interfaith dialog and community engagement at ODU. We are hopeful that many of you will consider connecting the screening to an extra credit opportunity or other class assignment. We are happy to arrange sign in sheets for instructors. The film has relevance for a number of different topics taught at ODU including: film and media studies, film production, Middle Eastern studies, international cultural studies, human geography, political science, social justice and human rights, gender studies, religious studies, and Arabic. We hope to have a large turn out at the screening. This is a unique opportunity to view an award-winning film that has received accolades at film festival all around the world and to engage with its creator about the film's themes, the filmmaking process, as well her experiences as an Arab-American woman working in the film industry.
