Master of Music in Education
General Secondary Education,
with an interest in Music Education

The Department of Music at Old Dominion University offers graduate study for music educators through the Master of Science in Education program designed by the Darden College of Education. A minimum of 31 semester hours is required for completion of this degree program. If a student elects to add other goals to the program, such as becoming a secondary education supervisor, then the program may require an additional 9 to 12 hours beyond the 31-hour minimum. There are three options available to those wishing to pursue this degree. These are:
  1. problems paper option--31 semester hours,
  2. seminar option--37 semester hours, and
  3. recital option--37 semester hours.
To be admitted to the program, students must:
  1. hold a bachelor's degree, preferably in secondary education,
  2. hold the Virginia Collegiate Professional Certificate or an equivalent certificate from another state,
  3. have a grade point average of 3.00 and an average of 3.00 in the major, and
  4. take the GRE.
Students seeking the M.S.S.E.--General Secondary Education with an interest area in music education must pass a theory placement test, administered by the music department; otherwise, students are required to take a music theory review course. Any student wishing to pursue the recital option must be approved by the music faculty before studying applied music at the graduate level. This degree program is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher education (NCATE). For additional information, please contact Dr. Nancy K. Area 1: SUBJECT SPECIALTY


12-18 Hours Required

The following two courses are required (each 3 credits, 6 credit hours)
MUSC 603: Principles of Music Education
MUSC 604: Foundations of Music Education

Three hours of the following courses:
MUSC 605: Literature of the Band and Orchestra (3 hours)
MUSC 606: Choral Music Literature (3 hours)

A minimum of three hours from the following courses:
MUSC 607: Orff Schulwerk, Level 1 (3 hours)
MUSC 608: Orff Schulwerk, Level 2 (3 hours)
MUSC 613: Workshop in Music Ed (1-3 hours)+
MUSC 614: Workshop in Instrumental Music (1-3 hours)+
MUSC 615: Workshop in Choral Music (1-3 hours)+
MUSC 616: Advanced Conducting Seminar (2 hours)
MUSC 680: Ensemble (1 hour)+
MUSC 695: Independent Study (1 hour)


+ means course may be taken up to three times for graduate credit.



Area 2: COGNATE


12-18 Hours Required

A minimum of twelve hours required (at least one course from the Historical/Philosophical category is required, students must complete course work from two of the three areas):

MUSC 566: Music in the Twentieth Century (3 hours)
MUSC 590: Music in the Renaissance Era (3 hours)
MUSC 591: Music in the Baroque Era (3 hours)
MUSC 592: Music in the Classical Era (3 hours)
MUSC 594: Music in the Romantic Era (3 hours)

MUSC 611: Current Trends in Elementary/Secondary Education (3 hours)
MUSC 612: Organization and Administration of Instrumental Music (2 hours)
MUSC 623: Arranging for Instrumental Ensembles (3 hours)
MUSC 635: The Use of Computers and Midi Technology in the Classroom (3 hours)
MUSC 636: Techniques of Jazz Education in the Secondary School (3 hours)
MUSC 639: Vocal/Choral Arranging (3 hours)


--Sociological/Psychological--
MUSC 691: Tests and Measurements in Music Education (3 hours)
MUSC 692: Psychology of Music (3 hours)
ELS 615: Advanced Human Development (3 hours)
ECI 512: Adolescent Development (3 hours)



Area 3: RESEARCH CORE


7-13 Hours Required

The following four courses are required:
ECI 600: Introduction to Graduate Research in Curriculum and Instruction (1 hour)
ECI 635: Research Methods in Education (3 hours)



OPTIONS


Students must choose one of the following:

--Problems Paper Option-- (3 hours)
ECI 636: Problems in Education

--Recital Option-- (9 hours)
ECI 639: Seminar in Education (3 hours)
MUSA 651: Applied Music (graduate level requires an audition) (3 hours)
MUSA 652: Applied Music (graduate level requires an audition) (3 hours)

ECI 639: Seminar in Education (3 hours)

An additional six hours are necessary to complete the minimum 37-semester-hour degree requirement for this option. Three of these hours must be completed in music courses.

Additional courses are to be selected by the student and the advisor from offerings in the Darden College of Education and the Department of Music to fit the professional needs of the student.
