Each 5" x 7" card is a different marine organism (or salt crystal) that was captured using a digital camera attached to a microscope. These images, more properly called photomicrographs, sometimes have colored backgrounds. The color is possible using a set of prisms and "filters" on the microscope that are arranged to achieve Nomarski Differential Interference Contrast. This optical technique employs light, rather than biological stain, to distinguish different components of specimens. Most of the specimens were collected in the waterways of Hampton Roads, Virginia.
