Communications Division

The Communications Division is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by five state-certified Police Dispatchers who are under the supervision of the Communications Supervisor. Dispatch is located at 4516 Monarch Way Norfolk, VA 23508.

To report emergencies, call 683-4000. The Communications Center can respond to requests for assistance by the hearing impaired by use of the Telephone Device for the Deaf (TDD).

ODUPD Dispatchers respond to calls for service from the campus and surrounding communities and prioritize those requests based on their urgency. Dispatchers monitor fourteen (14) telephone lines, two (2) radio frequencies, a variety of fire and intrusion alarms, numerous security cameras, sixteen (16) emergency call boxes located on and around the campus, and the red emergency telephones located in buildings throughout the campus.

Additionally, Dispatchers monitor Norfolk Police Department radio transmissions. A direct telephone link to the Norfolk Police Department's Communications Center is also maintained in the ODU Police Communications Center.

A Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system is utilized to assign and monitor all Police and Security Officer movements. Dispatchers also have available a computer link to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

To Report a Crime or Suspicious Activity

If you are calling to report a crime or any type of suspicious activity, be prepared to provide the Dispatcher with as much of the following information as possible:

The nature of your call. Give your name and describe the situation as briefly as possible while giving as much detail as possible.
The location where the situation is occurring.
A description of individual(s) involved, giving as much anformation as possible about clothing and physical characteristics.
A description of any vehicle(s) involved including make, body style, license number, etc.
Advise if any weapons may be involved.

Motorist Assistance Program

Under the Motorist Assistance Program (MAP), Police Dispatchers can issue jumper cables, a lug nut wrench for use in changing flat tires, and bottles of water for topping off radiators. Police vehicles CANNOT be utilized to jump start other vehicles, due to possible damage to sensitive radio and other electronic equipment in the police vehicles.

If you would like to utilize the motorist assistance program, you must present yourself at the Public Safety Building located at 4516 Monacth Way. You will need to bring your driver's license to check out needed equipment.

Your driver's license will be returned to you when you bring back the equipment you have borrowed.
