Graduate Financial Aid At Old Dominion University
Graduate students typically rely on Federal loan programs, graduate assistantships (teaching / research), tuition unfunded scholarships, work-study programs, fellowships, scholarships and/or work outside the University to finance graduate school. Graduate students must be admitted as degree-seeking and enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for financial aid. Eligible graduate students may apply for up to $20,500 in Federal Direct Stafford Loans by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To take advantage of the variety of other financial assistance options at the graduate level, students are encouraged to contact their program directors. Financial Aid Planning Strategies for Graduate Students at Odu:
Submit the Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the February 15 priority deadline. If you received Federal Aid in previous years, a Renewal Application may be filed instead of the FAFSA. You will need to include Old Dominion University in Section H (Information Release). The institution code is 003728 (important!). Ask your program director about assistantship opportunities. Report any tuition unfunded scholarships to our office. These may affect your eligibility for need-based aid.
Scholarships
Old Dominion University's scholarship program provides approximately $1,000,000 in scholarships to students each year. Individual donors, organizations, and corporations have established scholarships to recognize excellence in academic performance and to assist students in their educational pursuits. The following are scholarships designated for graduate students:

- The Delta Sigma Lambda - Dr. Ruth Harrell Scholarship
- The Hampton Roads Maritime Association Memorial Scholarship
- The Jacques S. Zaneveld Endowed Scholarship
- The Meredith Construction Company Scholarship
- The Peggy Woofter Hull Scholarship
- Theodore F. and Constance C. Constant Fellowhips
- Wild Water Rapids Visual Studies Fund
- The David Scott Sutelan Memorial Scholarship
Graduate students may also qualify for scholarships that are not designated specifically for undergraduates. All University Scholarships are described in the University Scholarship Guide and Application. To apply for University Scholarships, for the academic year (Fall and Spring), you must submit the University Scholarship Application by February 15th. Graduate awards, with the exception of the Delta Sigma Lambda-Dr. Ruth Harrell Scholarship, are awarded through the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Candidates are nominated by their program directors. Letters of interest should be directed to your program director and the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. A special application must be completed for the Delta Sigma Lambda-Dr. Ruth Harrell Scholarship. It may be picked up in the ODU Women's Center or the Financial Aid Office. For some awards, "financial need" is a factor in determining eligibility. To determine your eligibility for need-based awards, you must also file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as early in January as possible. The University Scholarship Guide and Application may be picked up in Rollins Hall, after December 1st.
