Modeling & Simulation (Engineering, D.Eng.)

Degree Level: Graduate
College: Engineering & Technology
Major : Engineering
Department: Modeling, Simulation & Visualization Engineering
Degree Earned: Doctor of Engineering

Further your background and expertise with a doctor of engineering degree in modeling and simulation. This is a practitioner based program designed to train individuals for careers the public or private sector. Students will have the opportunity to work with our faculty on research projects and gain experience solving real world problems.

The Modeling, Simulation & Visulization Engineering Department

The MSVE Department is located on the first floor of the E. V. Williams Engineering and Computational Sciences Building on the Old Dominion University Norfolk Campus. In addition to the department and faculty offices, this facility also houses several instructional and research laboratories, a virtual reality theater, and a four-walled C.A.V.E. (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment). A significant resource to the department is the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center located adjacent to the University's Tri-Cities Higher Education Center in Suffolk, Virginia. VMASC occupies a two-story 60,000 square foot building designed to support state-of-the-art research in modeling, simulation and visualization. Some of the center's facilities are used in the department's educational programs; in addition, VMASC researchers teach courses and mentor students in the department's academic programs.

Students Discuss Information

Students who enroll in the D. Eng. - M&S program normally are employed full-time and participate in the degree program on a part-time basis. Thus, there is no department or university financial aid available.

It is important that students in this program have the strong support and backing of their employer. This support often is exhibited through a flexible work schedule that recognizes the student's course schedule, encouragement and support to use a work related project as the basis for the applied doctoral project, participation of an appropriate company representative on the student's guidance committee and project committee, and the reimbursement of tuition costs. In the absence of some degree of employer support, it is very difficult to complete degree requirements in the allotted time period.

Modeling and simulation job opportunities include:

Designing and manufacturing simulation-based team training systems for the medical field, military training and mission rehearsal;

Designing and building computer games for education and entertainment;

Analyzing land use and transportation system designs; and,

Enhancing and improving complex social networks.

Classes & Requirements

The Department of Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering offers a graduate program leading to the Doctor of Engineering in Modeling and Simulation (DEng-M&S). This program was developed to provide the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation with exceptionally educated engineering practitioners. These individuals will have developed the highest possible capability to provide innovative solutions in modeling and simulation engineering endeavors. The graduates of this program will meet the highest standards for advanced level engineering and leadership positions in industry and government.

The D. Eng. in Modeling and Simulation program focuses on developing the advanced knowledge and skills to enable the graduate to conduct and lead advanced technical projects in an engineering environment. It affords engineering practitioners the opportunity to achieve advanced graduate education beyond the master's degree.

Students in this program normally are employed full-time in industry, government, or the military in an engineering capacity and have duties related to modeling and simulation. They often are responsible for conducting or leading advanced research and development activities suitable for investigation in an academic environment. They plan to participate in the D. Eng. program on a part-time basis and focus their program project work on job-related problems or investigations.
