The Certificate Program in Ophthalmic Technology is designed to produce an ophthalmic technologist with a strong background in the basic sciences and a high degree of technical competence in ophthalmic technology. The certificate, offered by the Department of Ophthalmology, Eastern Virginia Medical School, fulfills the professional electives requirements in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences offered by the College of Health Sciences, Old Dominion University. The pre-clinical and general education courses will be offered at Old Dominion University and the clinical program through Eastern Virginia Medical School and its clinical affiliates. After successful completion of the program, the student will be awarded a certificate of completion from Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University and will be eligible to sit for the written examination or national certification through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs/Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.
Internships in areas related to the program are available. Students are encouraged to assist with faculty research projects and to present their own research at regional, national and international professional communication associations. Opportunities to develop study abroad programs are available.
