Faculty, students, staff and administrators of Old Dominion University came together Wednesday, June 18, for a party honoring the retiring University Librarian Virginia S. O'Herron.

In her more than 10 years as head of the ODU Libraries, O'Herron presided over a time of technological advancement and physical growth. A major expansion completed three years ago added a Learning Commons and Student Success Center to the Perry Library on the main campus.

O'Herron joined ODU in 1993 as assistant university librarian for information services. She was promoted to associate university librarian in 2000 and became acting university librarian in 2002 before being named to the top job in 2004.

Prior to coming to ODU, she was director of the State University System of Florida Extension Library and held professional positions at Baker and Taylor Co. and DeVry Technical Institute. She has a master's degree in business administration from the University of Tampa, a master's in library science from Simmons College, and a bachelor of arts from Farleigh Dickinson University.

George Fowler, who joined ODU in 2011 as associate university librarian for information resources and technology, will become interim university librarian when O'Herron's retirement becomes effective on August 1.
