ODU Graduates Hear Valuable Words of Advice at Commencement Ceremonies
At the first of three Old Dominion spring commencement ceremonies, held Friday afternoon, graduates of the College of Arts and Letters heard remarks from Nancy Kirkpatrick, a 1980 ODU graduate who serves as president of worldwide marketing for Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate company.

The ODU Alumni Association presented Outstanding College Scholar awards to six graduating students at the Student Honors and Awards Dinner on May 8. One of the students, international business major Cheng Luo, also was honored as the overall Outstanding University Scholar.

HACE Presents Staff Member, Rookie Staff Member Awards at Annual Luncheon
The Hourly and Classified Employees Association presented its Staff Member of the Year and Rookie Staff Member of the Year awards on May 14 to Lillian Thompson from the School of Community and Environmental Health and Laura Thom from the School of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training.

She was one of 2,700 students receiving Old Dominion University degrees last weekend. Every student has stories of challenges overcome to reach the finish line, and they should feel justifiably proud of their achievements. The obstacles overcome by Helen Hightower, however, are the ultimate testament to determination and courage.

The Department of Human Resources, on behalf of the Quality of University Life Committee, hosted an open house and ice cream social for staff and faculty on Monday, May 12. The third annual event, held in the North Cafeteria of Webb Center, offered members of the campus community an opportunity to meet with colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere while enjoying a sweet, cold treat.

After it was learned that Sidney Dewberry, chairman emeritus and co-founder of Dewberry, a leading professional design firm that provides architecture, engineering, management and consulting services, would not be able to attend ODU's spring commencement to receive an honorary doctorate, President John R. Broderick, left, traveled to the company's headquarters in Fairfax, Va., May 2 to personally deliver the Doctor of Humane Letters degree. In his commencement remarks, Broderick said that Dewberry "has made important contributions to the nation's urban infrastructure and was involved in the political processes that laid the groundwork for smart growth in Northern Virginia."
