Health Sciences’ Debbie Bauman to Lead Next Provost’s Conversations Series Discussion

Debbie Bauman, assistant dean and associate professor of dental hygiene in the College of Health Sciences, will lead the next Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning discussion on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Presented by the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT), the Office of Distance Learning and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Carol Simpson, these brown bag lunch series presentations are open to all faculty members, and offer the opportunity to reflect and share about the teaching and learning process. CLT will provide light refreshments.

Bauman will speak on "Interacting with Students" from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons Conference Room at Perry Library.

Bauman, a passionate ODU alumna ('80 and '82), has been teaching dental hygienists for 31 years. Her research interests include instructional methodology and diabetes and its relationship to oral health. In addition to teaching undergraduates, Bauman teaches graduate students how to teach.

She has taken her passion for good oral health on two dental mission trips to Leon, Nicaragua, with the Norfolk-based organization Physicians for Peace, where she worked to start a dental assistant education program in Leon.

Currently, she is working on a Ph.D., teaching graduate and undergraduate students, and serving on the Board of Commissioners at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.

In her Conversation, Bauman will lead a discussion of successful interactions with ODU's diverse group of learners, both in and outside of class, synchronously and asynchronously, and via Web conferencing and video chat. She will also present a brief summary of college student development theory.

She encourages faculty participation in this Conversation and is eager to hear faculty members share stories of their successful student interactions.
