New Book Offers Program for Type 2 Diabetes Sufferers to Lose Weight, Cut Medications

Sheri Colberg-Ochs, well-known researcher on diabetes and exercise, is the co-author of a new book, "The Diabetes Breakthrough: A Scientifically Proven Plan to Lose Weight and Cut Medications" (Harlequin Nonfiction/Harvard Health Publications).

Co-written with Dr. Osama Hamdy of Harvard Medical School, the book is based on the Joslin Diabetes Center's successful and proven Why WAIT program. The authors say that those who follow the program outlined in their book can lose weight for good, cut medications and finally reclaim their health - in just 12 weeks.

"The success of the Joslin's program in helping people with diabetes lose weight and keep it off is astounding, and finally this program will be available to everyone who lives outside the Boston area (in book form). It truly is a breakthrough for people who want to lose weight and live long and well with diabetes or prevent it in the first place," said Colberg-Ochs, professor of exercise science at Old Dominion.

"The Diabetes Breakthrough" - Colberg-Ochs' 10th book as a sole or co-author - will be released later this month. For those suffering from type 2 diabetes, the possibility of stopping or reversing the relentless progression of this chronic disease is good news indeed.

Hamdy, the book's lead author, is the medical director of the Obesity Clinical Program at Joslin Clinic. He is clinical investigator and attending adult endocrinologist at Joslin Diabetes Center and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

For the first time, he shares the center's scientific breakthroughs in a usable and doable step-by-step program. And with the professionally formulated exercise plans fine-tuned by Colberg-Ochs, an exercise physiologist and renowned diabetes fitness expert, the authors say that readers will not only get results, but also keep them.

In the Joslin Diabetes Center's Why WAIT program, Hamdy has helped hundreds of patients:

Break free from the pill bottle. It is possible to cut medications by 50 to 60 percent - or even stop them altogether.

Stop fearing the scale. Readers can learn how to safely lose - and keep off - those 10, 20 or even 50-plus pounds that are holding them back from a healthy life.

Never dread exercise again. Those who follow the program can tailor their exercise to the way they really live and work, so they can get results without being a slave to the gym.

Make it easy. The dozens of checklists, goal worksheets and real-life success stories in the book will keep readers motivated to make smart decisions, even on the busiest days.

Those who follow the Joslin's Why WAIT program, Hamdy says, will never go hungry; can eat lots of delicious and nutritious food; and can save $100 per month on average on medications.
