ODU Economic Outlook Conference Rescheduled for Feb. 5

Delayed a week by the winter storm, Old Dominion University's Economic Forecasting Team will present its annual Economic Outlook on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Will the region's slow recovery from the "Great Recession" of 2008-09 continue? Will growth accelerate or stall in 2014? How will issues such as sequestration, consumer spending and energy costs affect the regional and national economy?

Those and many other questions will be answered when the Economic Forecasting Team presents its 2014 regional and national forecasts. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 29, the 2014 Economic Outlook Conference and Luncheon will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.

Forecasts presented by the team, composed of College of Business and Public Administration economics professors Vinod Agarwal and Gary Wagner, are widely respected as an accurate harbinger of the year ahead for the region.

Wagner will give the 2014 national economic outlook, beginning at 10:30 a.m. This presentation will be followed immediately by the 2014 Hampton Roads Economic Forecast Luncheon, from noon to 1:30, hosted by Agarwal, director of the Economic Forecasting Project team.

The event, sponsored by TowneBank, is co-hosted by ODU's Economics Club of Hampton Roads. Registration is strongly recommended: online at www.2014econforecast.eventbrite.com or by calling 683-5138. There is a $40 luncheon fee for non-members of the Economics Club.

Last year's forecast predicted regional economic growth of 1.68 percent, compared with national real gross domestic product growth of 2.1 percent. Previous economic forecasts, along with a full analysis and past year's scorecard, are available on the Economic Forecasting Project website, at http://www.odu.edu/forecasting.

The Economics Club of Hampton Roads co-sponsors the Economic Outlook Conference as part of its annual program of events and speakers aimed at engaging the local population in important economic issues. For more information or to join the Economics Club, visit http://bpa.odu.edu/bpa/econclub.shtml.
