Dance Theatre Concert Blends Ballet, Modern, Hip-Hop and Ballroom

The Old Dominion Dance Theatre Fall Concert will showcase ballet, modern, hip-hop and ballroom performances by faculty members and selected students, as well as a featured selection choreographed by New York City-based guest artist Laura Peterson.

Performances will be held at 8 p.m. Nov. 20-22 and at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Nov. 23 in the University Theatre.

Peterson, the artistic director of Laura Peterson Choreography, is known for creating highly physical dance pieces with stunning installation environments. She was at ODU in late October teaching classes and working with dance students. The group piece presented for the concert will be the product of her five-day residency.

Associate Professor Marilyn Marloff and adjunct faculty member Ashley Budy Whitlinger will present new works at the concert. Marloff's playful group piece proves that a quick look into an "empty" plastic bag can reveal some surprises. Whitlinger's new work is a lush display of classical technique set to Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre." The piece is a classical ballet exploration of form, pattern and musicality that is invigorated by a rich musical score.

Adjunct professor Wesley Acker's dance "TRY, Try...try..." is a hopeful journey that examines each individual's path through life. By incorporating three selections from the Beatles songbook, the piece explores how we find a sense of freedom, how we test our limits and, ultimately, how we find a personal sense of peace.

Adjunct professor Katie Iacono will present a new work, titled "Boon," that is a unique blend of modern/contemporary and hip-hop dance forms. This piece reflects the dilemma of expressing both sides of one's self in order to find a harmonious self.

The concert will also include a premiere by adjunct faculty member Rachel Thorne Germond and selected student works.

General admission is $14 and $12 for ODU students. Advance tickets are available at the University Tickets website, the Arts and Letters Box Office in the University Theatre or by phone at 683-5305. Tickets also may be purchased at the door.
