Jo-Anne Smetherham, Jennifer Fish and Thelma Nkone were among those who attended the International Programs’ reception honoring “The Nevergiveups” Monday at the Kornblau Alumni Center. The Nevergiveups is a group of grandmothers within the Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA) organization who live near Cape Town. Smetherham and Nkone are among five South African visitors who brought “The Nevergiveups” photo exhibition and book launch to campus. ODU’s relationship with GAPA goes back several years and stems from a service-learning study abroad course taught by Jennifer Fish, chair of the women’s studies department. Senior Aaron Evans celebrates after returning a punt 64 yards to lead ODU’s comeback win over Liberty on Saturday. The Monarchs trailed 17-7 with just over four minutes remaining when Evans caught the punt at the 36, went up the middle and burst outside untouched for the touchdown. The return set up Blair Roberts’ game-winning touchdown catch with 28 seconds remaining. It was the junior wide receiver’s second TD reception of the game. Evans and Roberts earned national honors from the College Football Performance Awards. The Monarchs travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 19, for a 7 p.m. contest. For the first time at ODU, more than 100 students from over 30 countries came together to participate in the 2013 Homecoming Parade in conjunction with the Office of Intercultural Relations. Organizations represented included the Global Monarch Club, International Student Advisory Board, Global Ambassador Program, Muslim Student Association, The F.O.R.E.I.G.N.E.R.S., Thai Student Association, Indian Student Association, Persian Student International Association, Chinese Student and Scholar Association, and many individual students.
