Jeffrey W. Ainslie

Mr. Jeffrey W. Ainslie was appointed to the Board of Visitors on July 1, 2010. He currently serves as chair of the Administration & Finance Committee and is a member of the Executive, Audit and Institutional Advancement Committees. He is also on the Board's Presidential Evaluation & Compensation Committee and as the Board's representative to the Real Estate Foundation.

Mr. Ainslie, Ainslie Group's President of Finance, Operations and Sales, is a 1983 graduate of Old Dominion University. He majored in Business Administration with an emphasis on Finance, Economics and Marketing. He also attended DeVry Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a 1994 graduate of Leadership Hampton Roads.

Born in Richmond, VA, Mr. Ainslie has lived in Ohio, New York, Miami and Atlanta, but has spent over 40 years in Hampton Roads. He began his career in the building business in 1972, working part time after school as a laborer and punch-out specialist for the award winning Virginia Beach builder, The Dragas Companies.

In June, 1980, Mr. Ainslie was recruited by R.G. Moore Building Corporation, a large local homebuilder interested in automating their purchasing and production. As lead estimator and purchasing agent, he developed extensive knowledge in design, component selection, contract negotiation and pricing, while facilitating the transformation to a fully automated Builder Information Job Cost Accounting System.

In June, 1982, with annual sales over $85,000,000, Mr. Ainslie was promoted to Assistant Vice-President, responsible for all estimating, purchasing, cost control, and for providing sales, marketing and financial information to various lending institutions in order to obtain financing for projects.

In August, 1984, Mr. Ainslie left R. G. Moore and founded Benchmark Building Corporation. Shortly thereafter, other family members joined the team. He has developed and implemented various software packages to perform complete detailed job estimating, sales tracking, loan and draw, bill of materials, project scheduling, detailed specifications, and cost analysis reporting.

In April, 1988, Mr. Ainslie formed the Artisan Building Group, Ltd., a company specializing in intricate commercial buildings such as banks, churches and country clubs. This small, but efficient company built over $5,000,000 of light to medium commercial projects in its first year.

After 15 years of partnering with his brother John at Benchmark Building Corp., in June, 1999, they joined with Widener Homes to form AinslieWidener. As President, Mr. Ainslie of was responsible for a building company with sales exceeding $120,000,000 annually.

In 2007, one of the three partners retired, leaving only the Ainslie brothers, thus the name change to Ainslie Group. Over the past 25 years, they have built in over 100 communities and have generated over $4.4 Billion in economic impact throughout Hampton Roads

Since their humble beginnings in 1984, the Ainslie brothers have assembled over 20 affiliated companies, ranging from apartment communities affordable to those with low-to-moderate incomes, to Bar-B-Que Sauce for our military, to Information Technology for the rest of us, but their main focus has been on providing shelter. With over 35 years of hands-on experience in building custom single-family homes, townhomes, and multi-family apartments and condominiums, the Ainslie brothers have provided a place to live for over 4,100 families in Southeastern Virginia. The mission of Ainsle Group is to design, develop and build homes for everyone at any and all price points, with one simple philosophy: Always Give People MORE Than They Expect!

Mr. Ainslie currently holds a Class A Contractors license in Virginia and was appointed by the Governor to the State Building Code Technical Review Board for the Department of Housing & Community Development. He has served on numerous state-appointed legislative committees and has testified as an expert before the Virginia House and Senate on many issues affecting the Commonwealth.

He is past president of the Tidewater Builders Association and the Home Builders Association of Virginia, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the local, state and National Association of Home Builders. He has been involved with The American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, served as President of Big Brothers/Big Sisters Foundation of South Hampton Roads, and served as Chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area Board for nine years.

Having served on the Hampton Roads Workforce Development Board for over ten years, Mr. Ainslie recently stepped down as Chair but remains active as Chair of the Youth Council. As a past graduate of Leadership Hampton Roads, he currently serves as their Chair-elect. He is also active on both the Chesapeake Advisory Board and Financial Services Board for Towne Bank. Recently he ended his nine years of service with the ODU Alumni Association, for which he served as President in 2009-10, but remains extremely active with Old Dominion Football and other sports activities of the University.

Mr. Ainslie and his wife Ruby reside in Virginia Beach have three children, two of whom are students/graduates of Old Dominion University and one a graduate of Virginia Tech.
