Oct 2008-
Hampton Roads Naval Reserve Officers’
Training Corps (NROTC) hosted their annual Naval Junior Reserve
Officers’ Training Corp (NJROTC) Field Meet on Saturday, October
4, 2008. 14 high schools from Virginia and Maryland were in attendance,
with over 400 NJROTC cadets.
The event was kicked off with a presentation of
the colors by the host school, Norview High School. After opening
remarks by Hampton University’s Charlie Company Commanding
Officer, Midshipman Jad’e Calhoun, the students participated
in the Australian Trolley, Curl-Ups, Pushups, 8x200 meter relay,
16x100 yard relay and tug-of-war. This was Calhoun’s first
time organizing and executing this type of event. “The day
went well. The students had a good time and were all participating.
Everything turned out as I would’ve liked it to,” said
Calhoun.
Naval Science Instructors are prior service military members employed
by the various school districts to lead the NJROTC program at their
schools. LCDR Stuart Littlejohn is the Senior Naval Science Instructor
at Norview High School. When asked what this field meet means to
his students, he stated “It is an opportunity to showcase
their hard work and get into some friendly competition.” LCDR
Littlejohn’s students know the meaning of hard work. They
practice twice weekly as a team and some students go as far as to
practice an additional 2-3 mornings a week themselves at 0600. These
students portray the very definition of pride and teamwork.
Participating for the first time this year was
Heritage High School from Newport News, VA, under the direction
of Senior Naval Science Instructor LCDR Eric Tyson.. “We try
to make them motivated,” said LCDR Tyson, whose team last
year didn’t have enough students to participate. “We
hope they go back to school and tell their friends about NJROTC
and we increase our numbers.” This year, LCDR Tyson’s
team came back with enough students to enter the competition and
the team hopes that this will increase their participation for the
next meet.
Traveling over 200 miles to attend the NJROTC Field Meet, Friendly
High School from Fort Washington, MD, and its 47 students in attendance,
participated in every event. For Cadet Yesenia Rodriguez, Executive
Officer, this is her first time traveling with the team to participate
in this meet. “Our school is very active. We are one of the
largest in area 5 and we wanted to give cadets a chance to participate
and get involved,” said Rodriguez, whose events include the
Australian Trolley and the Tug-of-War. Area 5 consists of schools
from Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, Italy and Spain.
The main goal of the NJROTC Field Meet is to
promote friendly competition among the schools and to ensure that
each school has an enjoyable time. It also serves as a formative
recruiting tool to inform students and parents of the opportunities
available to them by choosing NROTC. NROTC students from Old Dominion
University, Hampton University and Norfolk State University served
as judges and scorekeepers and were available to speak with anyone
interested about the advantages of choosing a NROTC scholarship.
Although every team was a winner, the team that placed in first
overall was First Colonial High School, followed by the host school,
Norview High School, and Salem High School.

The Old Dominion University Army ROTC and Hampton
Roads Navy ROTC Consortium marked the tragic events of September
11, 2001, with a remembrance run this morning. This event serves
as a reminder for the students and staff of why they have volunteered
to answer the call to arms as an officer in their respective branches,
carrying out the proud traditions of the United States Army, Navy
and Marine Corps. For the fourth consecutive year, these two units
have jointly held the Patriot’s Day Run that takes them around
the Old Dominion campus in a battalion formation that signifies
the joint fight we will face together in the future.
